On occasion, Hyacinth recalled the day her life changed forever. Being a grown accountable woman, she’d stopped her crying years ago. Though the sun shone brightly that spring day, something about it seemed dreary.
Bitten by confusion, five year old Hyacinth stood beside her bed, while her mother crammed her best fitting school clothes into a small overnight case. After stuffing personal items into her own luggage, Selma marched outside with Hyacinth in tow. She tossed her suitcase inside the trunk of their old car and slammed it shut. In a stern tone she then told Hyacinth to get inside.
They drove down the street, passing house after house. Soon, a familiar route unfolded before her. There was no doubt; they were going to Grandma Pearl’s. But somehow, this drive felt different from most. When her mother’s brows were furrowed, a sharp whack on the bottom had taught her not to ask questions.
